Questions about the benefits finder
Does it cost anything to use the benefits finder?
No. Answer the questions and see your results on screen, with no account and no email needed.
Does this mean we'll be paid these benefits?
No. The results show what you might be able to get, from the answers you gave. DWP, Social Security Scotland, the Department for Communities in Northern Ireland or your council decide every claim.
Do you keep my answers?
No. Your answers stay in your browser and are gone when you close the tab. If you ask us to email your results, we use your email address only to send them. If you join the waitlist, we keep your email and which results were shown, and the first half of the postcode if you gave it.
What counts towards the 35 hours of caring?
Time spent helping the person you look after, such as washing, cooking, shopping, paperwork, taking them to appointments and keeping them company. It doesn't have to be hands-on help, and the hours can be spread across the week.
Can I get Carer's Allowance if I get State Pension?
If your State Pension is £86.45 a week or more, Carer's Allowance won't be paid on top. It's still worth claiming, because being entitled can add £48.15 a week to Pension Credit and help with Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction.
Can Carer's Allowance affect the benefits of the person I look after?
It can. If they live alone and get Pension Credit, being paid Carer's Allowance for them usually ends their severe disability addition of £86.05 a week. Talk to Citizens Advice or Carers UK before you claim.
Is it different in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland?
Yes. In Scotland, Social Security Scotland pays Pension Age Disability Payment, Adult Disability Payment and Carer Support Payment instead of Attendance Allowance, PIP and Carer's Allowance, at the same main rates. Northern Ireland has domestic rates instead of Council Tax, and its own Department for Communities. Grants for adapting a home are different in each nation.
Who can help me apply?
Citizens Advice, Carers UK and your local carer centre can help with forms and appeals at no cost. GOV.UK, mygov.scot and nidirect have the official forms.
If you're worried about their health, contact their GP or NHS 111. In an emergency call 999.
